Temperature Resistant Miniature RFID

"FEIG Electronics and smart-TEC, in cooperation together have developed a new medical device RFID solution for use in laser scalpels, ensuring patient safety.

The transponder is integrated into the connector of the laser and the application incorporates an extremely robust and temperature resistant RFID tag. The transponders can be sterilized via EtO (Ethylenoxide) or pressurized steam.

The RFID transponder maintains data about usage and sterilization to increase both patient security and error prevention. If the surgeon attempts to use a laser which had not been sterilized since the previous use, the unit will not function. Added patient safety is one key driver in utilizing RFID in medical applications."

RFID in all new mobiles by next summer

"They don't know really where those keys are," he said. "So they want to replace all the locks with RFID locks, put RFID-capable phones in the hands of all their personnel and then they can control the access to these sites."

Motorola LANPlanner

"LANPlanner is a direct descendent of one of the original WLAN predictive tools from RF modeling pioneer Wireless Valley, acquired by Motorola. This is a very robust product, and, like all planning tools, perhaps a bit intimidating to non-engineers. Operation, however, is straightforward, and includes both predictive and analytical capabilities."

June 21, 2009

"GAO RFID Inc. (www.GAORFID.com) has rolled out a new UHF EPC Class 1 Gen 2 handheld RFID reader which features an industry leading read range of 7 meters in open space and up to 11 meters in an indoor confined area. The ultra-rugged reader has undergone thorough drop testing and withstood 1.5 meter drops on 6 sides. Game Changer in Retailing, Bar Code Is 35

"But the bar code has become much more than that since it was first used to read the price on a 10-pack of Juicy Fruit gum (67 cents) on the morning of June 26, 1974. Now they are used to board airplanes and track packages. Bar codes help people with diabetes calibrate glucose meters and researchers study the pollination habits of bees. They inspired a hand-held video game, Barcode Battler, in 1991."

RFID-Enabled Phones Could Let Credit Card Companies Track Users

"An Ericsson executive says all new mobile phones sold in 2010 will include an RFID chip that will allow owners to open their car or house door with their phone. A handy feature, no doubt, for some people. But the executive says the chip might also be used by credit card companies to track the location of cardholders to cut down on fraud."

Motorola debuts new RFID reader

On June 22, 2009 Motorola celebrated the anniversary of the barcode scanner. Today the Holtsville division of the company looks to its future.

"Motorola’s enterprise mobility business released its FX7400 series of radio-frequency identification readers today, a line that the company says is half the size of your average RFID reader, making it more practical for retail applications.

RFID tags are different than your average barcode in that they are read using radio waves, making them scannable from a further distance. An E-ZPass tag used in automobiles so drivers can pay tolls without having to come to a complete stop at tollbooths is one example of an RFID application.

The FX7400 reader can be installed anywhere in a retail location, managing inventory by counting the number of signals it receives from tagged merchandise.

It is expected to be available in the U.S. and Europe in the third quarter of 2009 and globally by the end of the year."

RFID Tag Functions Directly on Metal Surfaces

"Confidex has launched the RFID tag SteelWING, a passive highfrequency (UHF) tag that supports the EPC Class 1 Generation 2 specification.

The tag offers a read range of up to 32 ft and has an adhesive backing so it can be directly attached to a metal surface and still perform without any spacer material between it and the metal surface.

According to Confidex, SteelWING can also be attached to other materials, though it will operate with slightly reduced performance when not attached directly to a metal surface.

SteelWING is equipped with NXP Semiconductors’ G2XM chip, which has extended user memory. The company also says it can deliver the SteelWING with pre-encoding or a customer-specific label visually showing the encoded data in bar-code or human-readable form."

Coke uses RFID for drink dispensers

"What make the Freestyle drink dispenser so special is on the inside, where the 30 RFID-tagged cartridges of various flavors are used to mix the staggering combination of drinks. RFID readers inside the machines monitor the status of the cartridges while the dispenser itself actively collects data on what customers are drinking. And all these business intelligence is then transmitted each night via a private Verizon wireless network to Coke's SAP data warehouse system in Atlanta."

RFID Tracks Mussel Beds in Spain

"We were aware that RFID was being used in other industries, but as far as we knew it hadn't been used in this particular industry," continues Nuez, who has an engineering degree from the University of Vigo. "We felt that it would be a very good tool to simplify tracking the ropes themselves."
